What To Expect After I Wake Up From General Anaesthesia
Hi, Dr Fong here from Diggers Rest Dental House, part of the Dental House Group.
If you’re feeling nervous about undergoing dental treatment under general anaesthesia, you’re not alone. One of the most common questions I hear is, “What will it feel like when I wake up?” It’s a completely normal concern, and the good news is that with today’s techniques, recovery tends to be much easier than people expect.
The first thing most patients notice when they wake up is that the procedure is already done. It often feels like only a few seconds have passed, even if the treatment took an hour or more. You’ll likely feel a bit drowsy or groggy at first, but that sensation fades gradually over the next few hours.
It’s also common to notice a dry mouth or a slightly sore throat, which can happen due to the breathing support used during your procedure. If you’ve had something like wisdom teeth removed or implant surgery, you might feel a little numb or tender in the area, but we’ll have already given you pain relief to keep you comfortable for the first stage of recovery.
After waking up, one of the most important things is having someone with you. You won’t be able to drive yourself home, and you might feel a little disoriented for the rest of the day. We always recommend heading straight home to rest and take it easy.
Before you leave, we’ll walk you through your aftercare instructions. This includes when to take your medication, what kinds of food to eat, and how to manage swelling or discomfort. Most patients feel back to normal within about 24 hours, but it’s important to listen to your body and give yourself time to recover.
So if you’ve been putting off a treatment because of dental anxiety or uncertainty around general anaesthesia, we’re here to answer your questions and help you feel at ease.
Send us a DM or give us a call on 1800 GENTLE to chat with our team and organise a consultation. We’ll make sure you feel fully prepared for a smooth, comfortable experience.
