Indirect and Direct Restorations

Tooth restorations may be created directly in your mouth while you wait or outside your mouth and then placed into your tooth. The type of restoration used will depend on the extent of tooth damage and the type of dental solution you choose.

Direct restorations

mainly include dental fillings. Used to repair a cavity in a tooth, a special material will be placed into the hole to strengthen the tooth structure and protect the tooth from further damage. The filling material may be created with dental bonding, resin or gold and will be chosen according to your specific needs. This type of restoration is often done in one office visit.

Indirect restorations

are created outside of the mouth. First, an impression or mould of your teeth is taken, which will be used to create the restoration. An indirect restoration may be a dental inlay, onlay, crown or bridge. Other indirect restorations include dental veneers and dentures.

With this dental solution, your tooth will be prepared for the restoration and you may be fitted with a temporary while you wait. Once ready, you will return for an office visit and the restoration will be cemented to your tooth. If you are receiving a dental implant, the implant post will first be placed into the jawbone and the restoration will be fitted to the post when your mouth is healed.

Creating and Fitting Tooth Restorations

Each tooth restoration is custom made for each patient. Direct restorations are created with a soft material that will naturally take the shape of the cavity or hole it is filling. Indirect restorations are created in a lab by a skilled dental technician, and the materials may include composite resin, porcelain, silver, gold, cobalt-chrome or glass ionomer cement. The indirect restoration will be placed on your prepared tooth when you return for an office visit. However, if you choose CEREC (Chairside Economical Restorations of Esthetic Ceramic), your restoration can be created and placed on the same day to save you time.

Risk Factors with Dental Restorations

Tooth Restoration - Caroline Springs, Hillside, Taylors Lake and Sydenham - Diggers Rest Dental House

Risk Factors with Dental Restorations

Risk factors for dental restorations are dependent on the type of restoration you have and the extent of damage before you received the restoration. For example, deep or extensive cavities may have led to nerve damage, requiring the need for a root canal treatment in the future. Some complications may include weakened tooth structure if the damage to your tooth was extensive prior to the restoration. Our team of expert dentists will help mitigate the risks with proper treatment and care.

Dental implants are higher risk restorations, due to the procedure that includes oral surgery. Some risks may include infection, flap breakdown, peri-implantitis or destructive inflammation or failure. These risks are higher in patients who do not follow guidelines or for those who smoke. Our dentists have helped thousands of patients with dental implants and can greatly mitigate risks. We will do a full exam to ensure you have the structure and jawbone integrity to support a dental implant and will help you maintain and care for them with regular dental checkups
