Tooth Structure and Decay

A tooth is composed of the hard crown that you see above the gum and the tooth root that is hidden below the gums. The root is composed of blood vessels and nerves, which is called the pulp and if it gets infected, you may experience sensitivity or pain. An infection may stem from tooth decay that is left untreated, but can also be due to trauma or an old or damaged dental filling.

When the infection spreads into the tooth root, most patients feel extreme pain and in some cases an abscess may form on the gum near the infected tooth. If it is left untreated, the infection can spread throughout the mouth and into other parts of the body, and you risk losing the tooth.

The pain associated with an infected tooth root leads to people fearing treatment. However, during root canal treatment, the pulp and nerve are removed and so the source of pain is removed. We provide anesthetic for patients who need pain reduction and sleep dentistry for those who may have dental anxiety. Our patients’ comfort is a priority and we will do our best to provide a low-stress dental visit for your root canal treatment.

Tooth Structure and Decay

Root canal treatment is a restorative dental solution that helps dissolve pain and save the affected tooth. During this treatment, the pulp and nerve in the tooth root are removed and the root is then cleaned and disinfected to remove the infection. We then fill the root canal with a special material that protects the root and stops bacteria and debris from taking hold in the future. Our team of skilled professionals will work with you to ensure that you are comfortable during the entire process. And if you suffer from dental anxiety, talk to us so we can work together and find a solution that works for you.

Signs You May Need Root Canal Treatment

Sometimes patients feel no pain, in spite of an infected tooth root. This is why regular dental checkups are necessary so the dentist can monitor your teeth and watch for signs of infection. Most patients experience great pain with an infected tooth root and if not treated, the infection can spread, which is why it is important to know the symptoms and signs. Some of the signs you may need root canal treatment include:

s
Ongoing tooth and/or jaw pain
s
Extreme toothache that doesn’t respond to over-the-counter pain medications
s
Chipped and cracked teeth are more susceptible to infection
s
A tooth with an old cavity can allow infection to take hold
s
Swollen or painful gums
s
Gum darkening around an infected tooth
s
Tooth sensitivity to extreme food and beverage temperatures
Keep in mind that not all pain or discomfort leads to the need for root canal treatment. Regular dental checkups and professional cleanings can help us monitor your teeth and stop infections before it spreads.

How Root Canal Treatment Works

When you come to Diggers Rest Dental House, we will first do a dental examination and assessment of your overall oral health. If an infection is suspected, we will take x-rays that can show us where the infection is as well as the shape of your root so we can more easily clean it. You will be provided with anesthesia, if necessary, and if you had prior pain, you may have been instructed to take pain medication before your arrival to minimise discomfort.

After the x-rays, your tooth root will be cleaned and disinfected. Once we know the infection has been removed, the root will be filled with a special material to protect it. If your infection is extensive, the dentist may apply specialised medicine and then schedule you for a return visit. Once complete, your tooth will be protected with a dental crown or another appropriate restorative solution.

Benefits of Root Canal Treatment

Root Canal Treatment - Caroline Springs, Hillside, Taylors Lake and Sydenham - Diggers Rest Dental House

Benefits of Root Canal Treatment

The first benefit of root canal treatment is that the infection is removed, which removes the source of pain and stops it from spreading. Also called endodontic therapy, root canal treatment protects your jawbone and other teeth but will save your natural tooth so you maintain bite function. Placing a dental crown is another layer of protection so your tooth remains free of future infections.

After-Care for Root Canal Treatment

It is normal for the treated tooth to be sensitive right after treatment. In most cases, patients recover using over-the-counter pain medications that help reduce pain and inflammation. A few patients may receive a prescription for oral antibiotics to take home. Root canal treatments have an 80% – 90% success rate and keep their teeth much longer than if the infection is not treated. If you received a temporary crown to cover and protect your tooth, you will have to return for a visit to get your permanent crown or restoration.
