Why Orthodontics?
Why Orthodontics?

Parents often begin orthodontic treatment with their children while young to set them up for a lifetime of oral health. Between ages 11-16 years old, children’s bones are still malleable. Therefore they respond quicker to orthodontic treatment with less discomfort. The results are long-lasting and the sooner treatment begins, the easier it is for both the child and your wallet.
Adults can benefit from orthodontic services, too, as more treatments are available that are both discreet and effective. Today, there is a wide variety of orthodontic solutions to choose from, including clear and ceramic braces or Invisalign clear aligner trays. Each of these solutions provides a way for adults to straighten teeth with a treatment that will not interfere with work or daily life.

How does Orthodontics Stay in Place?
Risks and Recovery
Braces are a common orthodontic treatment for alignment and bite correction, but they come with risks and recovery considerations.
Possible risks include:
- Gum irritation or mouth ulcers from brackets and wires
- Temporary discomfort after adjustments
- Difficulty cleaning teeth, which can increase the risk of cavities or gum inflammation
- Enamel decalcification or staining if oral hygiene is not maintained
- In some cases, root shortening may occur over time
Recovery considerations:
- Mild soreness is common for a few days after fitting or adjustments
- Patients usually adapt quickly to speaking and eating with braces
- A soft diet can help during the first few days of treatment
- Regular dental and orthodontic reviews are essential for monitoring progress

Caring for Your Orthodontics
Caring for Your Orthodontics
Each dental solution will have its own system of care and your dentist will provide you with customised instructions for cleaning your teeth and your device. Overall, daily brushing and flossing will be a key practice in keeping your mouth healthy and your teeth free of decay and bacteria that can cause infection. Clear aligner trays are easy to remove, so you can eat then, brush, and clean the tray before you replace it. Headgear is removable, and braces can be cleaned while you clean your teeth.
Your dentist may recommend a special tool to help you clean your teeth and braces, such as an oral irrigator to clean between your teeth and braces. And, of course, regular dental checkups and professional cleanings should be part of your overall oral health and orthodontic treatment to keep your mouth and teeth fresh and healthy.
