The General Examination

A general dental examination is a time when the dentist will evaluate your current oral health condition and health history. You are free to discuss all of your dental concerns and goals so we can design a treatment plan if needed. During a general exam, you may receive x-rays, photos or any other diagnostics that are necessary to get a full picture of your oral health. If any problems are found, your dentist will fully explain the situation and discuss all treatment options with you, so you can make an informed decision on what is best for you.

Dental Hygiene and Professional Cleaning

Dental hygiene and professional cleanings are an important part of preventive oral health care. While brushing your teeth and flossing every day are necessary for optimal oral health, getting your teeth professionally cleaned helps remove the sticky plaque that hides between and around teeth. If this plaque is not removed, it can cause tooth decay and cavities. Over time an infected tooth may require root canal therapy or removal if decay is left untreated for too long.

A dental hygienist is equipped with special tools that are designed to remove sticky plaque and hard dental calculus that can also cause teeth to yellow or dull. During the professional cleaning, the hygienist will be able to view your teeth from all angles, which is another chance to find any hidden problems. Therefore, your professional cleaning will not only leave your teeth clean and fresh, but is an excellent preventive tool to help stay on top of your oral health.

Dental Care and Prevention

If you experience dental pain or other problems, they will not magically go away if ignored. Getting prompt dental treatment can keep small problems small while preventing them from turning into larger health issues.

For example, gum disease is an infection that can spread from the mouth into other parts of your body through the bloodstream. Treating gum disease is the first step to eliminating the infection to stop the spread. Wisdom teeth that have not erupted can be a source of pain and damage to surrounding teeth. Luckily, a dental exam can detect these problems early and deal with them, saving you the higher cost of more complicated treatments in the future.

The following are some of the issues we can find and treat early before they turn into larger issues:

Z
Tooth decay can lead to tooth loss or root canal problems
Z
Gum infections and gum diseases that can spread infection
Z
Impacted or problematic wisdom teeth that can harm surrounding teeth
Z
Tooth erosion due to teeth grinding can lead to pain and tooth loss

Prevent Health Problems with Comprehensive Dental Care

Dental problems may be an indication or a result of certain health issues. Dental health is a window into your overall health because of the surprising connections between oral health and overall wellbeing. For this reason, it is important to maintain regular general dental examinations and cleanings as another layer of prevention and early treatment. The following are some health issues linked to dental health:

Acid Reflux

is a health condition in which gastric fluids back up through the esophagus from the stomach. If this condition is left untreated or continues too long, it can affect the teeth leaving them sensitive as the tooth enamel is corroded and weakened. Teeth that are subject to corrosion can be identified by the dentist before you feel pain, and early detection means early treatment.

Diabetes

is a condition that puts patients at a higher risk for gum disease. That’s because overall, health complications from diabetes often lead to a higher risk of contracting infections, including those that lead to gum disease. And it turns out that gum disease can raise blood sugar levels in people with and without diabetes. Along with daily brushing and flossing, getting regular dental exams and professional hygiene cleanings can help keep your teeth and gums healthy and free from infection.

Candida Overgrowth

is a condition in which the candida yeast grows out of control and affects other parts of the body, including the mouth. Commonly called thrush or oral candidiasis, this condition presents as thick, white patches in the mouth that can be painful. Your dentist can diagnose this condition early and getting your teeth professionally cleaned is often the first step to bringing this condition under control.

Leukemia

is a disease that requires chemotherapy treatments. While necessary, these treatments can lead to infections that cause gum disease. Rarely, recurring gum disease can be a warning sign that there are other health problems that need to be dealt with. Regular general examinations can help identify oral health problems as soon as they arise, allowing for early treatment which can be less complicated and less costly.
Common dental problems include tooth decay and mouth infections and can easily be treated if detected early. We work with our patients through regularly scheduled dental checkups to keep problems at bay and preserve or restore your oral health. And thanks to modern technology, along with early detection, many problems are more easily treated with minimal discomfort.
