Dental Implants - Caroline Springs, Hillside, Taylors Lake and Sydenham - Diggers Rest Dental House

Dental implants are a modern and popular dental solution to replace a missing tooth. Traditionally when a tooth goes missing, it is replaced with a bridge that looks like a normal tooth, but the underlying jawbone will deteriorate due to lack of a tooth root to keep the bone stimulated. In addition, a bridge requires abutment teeth for support, meaning the enamel of the surrounding teeth will need to be altered to hold the bridge. But dental implants have revolutionised dentistry.

Today teeth and their roots can be replaced with dental implants. This allows you to replace your missing tooth with a fully functioning prosthesis, which protects your jawbone and no need to alter the surrounding teeth. Dental implants at Diggers Rest Dental House are an option we offer for replacing missing teeth. Our team of dentists are highly trained and experienced with dental implants as we have placed thousands for our patients over the years.

What is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a dental prosthesis that consists of a titanium post surgically placed into the jawbone and then another prosthesis secured onto the post, such as a dental crown, bridge or denture. It is considered a permanent solution to replace a missing tooth and can stop your jawbone from shrinking. Patients like dental implants because they can be cleaned along with the other natural teeth and unlike traditional dentures, there is no need to remove them.

The Benefits of Dental Implants at Diggers Rest Dental House

Dental implants are an updated way to replace missing teeth. They look and function like your own natural teeth and protect the surrounding teeth, thanks to the slowing of bone loss. A summary of the benefits of dental implants includes the following:
A dental implant replaces both the tooth and its root
Replacing the tooth root stops or slows jawbone shrinkage
The process of osseointegration of the jawbone around the post fills out the face, having an anti-aging effect
The post is made of titanium, which is biocompatible with human tissue
Replacing the tooth and its root prevent surrounding teeth from shifting out of place
Dental implants are easier to take care of than bridges
Dental implants allow you to chew and eat as if you had your natural teeth
The result looks, feels and functions like your own tooth

Who Can Get Dental Implants?

While dental implants are a popular dental solution, they may not be right for some patients. For example, they are mainly used in patients with healthy gums. That’s because surgery is required to place the implant into the jawbone and problems with gums can cause problems with the implant. The following is how to know whether you would be a candidate for dental implants:

Healthy Gums

Healthy gums are necessary for the tissue to handle the surgery and heal afterward. But if you have a gum disease such as gingivitis or periodontitis, in most cases we can treat it and restore your oral health to support dental implants.

Healthy Jawbone

Because the dental implant must be placed into the jawbone, it is best that you have sufficient bone density so that it can heal properly, allowing the tissue to grow around the implant. This is the process of osseointegration and helps secure the dental implant, making it strong enough to hold the prosthesis, or tooth replacement, and allow you to chew and eat comfortably. If you have suffered bone loss, we may still be able to help. Some patients can get a bone grafting procedure first to build up the bone. Once healed, we can then place the implant.

Commitment to Oral Hygiene

Candidates for dental implants must be committed to maintaining good oral hygiene practices to ensure a healthy environment for healing. It is important to begin with a healthy mouth with no infections and once the implant process is complete, the mouth must remain healthy so the gums and bone heal fully. When your implant is healed and the crown is placed, maintaining oral health will ensure your prosthetic remains healthy and last a lifetime.

Teeth Grinding

If you grind your teeth, let the dentist know. This may interfere with your ability to receive a dental implant, however in some cases a mouth guard may be offered for protection, while other patients may benefit with treatment for bruxism.

Post Care for Dental Implants

Receiving dental implants requires oral surgery and will take time to heal. As with any surgery and dental treatments, there are some guidelines you can follow at home to ensure your path to healing is quick. You dentist or oral surgeon will provide specific instructions for your situation since each patient has unique needs. However, the following are some general guidelines that will help you understand the healing process:
Z
Do not smoke while your implants are healing, as this can interfere by causing infection and worse, implant failure
Z
Gently brush and floss as recommended by your physician, but avoid rinsing the day of surgery
Z
After the day of surgery, many patients can gently rinse the mouth with warm saltwater
Z
Use an ice pack on your face near the implant to calm discomfort and swelling
Z
Take any prescribed medications to reduce pain and inflammation
Z
Avoid hot liquids and spicey food and beverages for 3-4 days after surgery
In spite of the fact that dental implants require oral surgery, it is considered a straightforward, minor surgical procedure. We do a thorough examination and assessment for each patient to ensure they are a candidate for dental implants. Once placed, many patients are quite surprised at relatively little discomfort they have afterward. As long as you follow healthy oral hygiene habits and follow through with regular dental visits, you should have no issues and enjoy your dental implants for a lifetime.
