Digital Smile Design Technology
Digital Smile Design Technology
Digital Smile Design is a system that uses the latest diagnostic tools, allowing us to take photos, scans and digital x-rays to begin planning your treatment. Intraoral scans record images of your lips, gums and smile and how they interact with your teeth, which helps identify structural considerations within the mouth or jaw area. Video recordings of your facial features in motion give us a fuller picture of your current dental presentation and help inform your treatment plan.
The DSD system provides a fully customised treatment plan based on your goals and dental needs. The technology allows for clearer communication between you and your team of dental professionals. You will be involved in the planning process throughout, and when you are comfortable with the proposed approach, we will discuss the treatments that may be needed to work toward your desired outcome.
The DSD Treatment Path
Your first visit for Digital Smile Design is an exam in which we gather all diagnostic data, which may include x-rays, photos, 3D images and videos. This is a chance for you to ask any questions and share your goals.
All of the data will be uploaded into the DSD software system, which helps us plan your proposed treatment.
On your next visit, you can review an indication of how your smile may look and discuss any changes. Also called a “mock-up,” this planning stage will be refined until you are comfortable with the proposed direction. From there, we can map out a treatment path to work toward your goals.
Limitations of Digital Smile Design
Digital Smile Design is a valuable planning tool, but it has some limitations to be aware of.
Points to keep in mind:
- The digital preview is a guide and not a guarantee of the final outcome
- Treatment steps may differ from the initial design once clinical factors are fully assessed
- The accuracy of the preview depends on the quality of scans, photographs and diagnostic information
- A full consultation is required to confirm suitability for any treatment based on the design

Aesthetic and Oral Health Goals
The treatments used as part of a DSD plan include many options that may also support your oral health. For example, addressing teeth alignment can make them easier to clean, reducing your risk of future decay and infection. Protecting teeth that are chipped or cracked can help prevent further damage, while addressing worn teeth may help reduce the risk of discomfort from an uneven bite. The following are some concerns that may be addressed with DSD treatments:
