  4. What Is the Downtime of an All on 4 Plus® Implant Procedure?

Hi, I’m Dr Fong, the founder and principal dentist of Dental House Group.

This morning, I did an All on 4 Plus® consultation with our long-time patient, Mary from Bacchus Marsh. She is experiencing some issues with her denture and is considering an All on 4 Plus® procedure to update her smile with a convenient and long-term solution. While we were talking she mentioned she has a very busy schedule and asked, what is the downtime of an All on 4 Plus® procedure?

I thought, what a great question, and since I hear it often, I thought I’d make a video about it for anyone who’s thinking about this solution.

The term All on 4 Plus® is referring to using dental implants to hold a full arch of denture in place. It is considered a permanent replacement for teeth because they are not removable and last a long time, maybe even a lifetime if your teeth are taken care of properly.

Dentures are not good for some patients as they can slide around, irritating the gums and causing one to feel self-conscious in public. Replacing teeth with a denture that are secured to dental implants removes these worries.

The procedure to get All on 4 Plus® dental implants will require an initial appointment where we gather the records needed to plan your treatment, but there is no downtime for this step.

You will then have another appointment that is a surgery where we will place the implants. While the implants might take 3-6 months to integrate into your jawbone, most people only have 1-3 days of downtime, where they may stay home and rest to allow for the initial healing. You will also have a mockup, or temporary prosthesis, so you can go about your life without worry while the bone integration is taking place.

After the implants are integrated into your jawbone, you will come in for another visit for the arch to be secured onto the implants. Some patients may require a couple days off work afterward, but most can go right back within a day or two.

How much downtime a patient needs is dependent on a few things. Firstly, your state of oral health will have an impact on how much downtime you need. Some people have stronger bones that heal quicker than others. Your overall level of health will also determine how much downtime you will have. For example, younger, healthier patients might recover quicker than more mature adults, especially if they have other health issues so need more recovery time. Your recovery time is unique for you, but what we just discussed should give you some general guidelines.

Here at Dental House Group, we work with all of our patients on an individual basis to determine the best and quickest route of recovery. We will go over all treatment options with you, so you can take a proactive role in your dental treatment. Our goal is to give you the most comfort while providing the best level of service.
